New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the centenary celebrations of Visva Bharati University in Santiniketan through video conferencing on 24 December. PM Modi will begin his address at this event through conferencing from 11 am. The Governor of West Bengal and the Union Minister of Education will also be present at the event. It has been informed by the Prime Minister's Office on Tuesday.
Vishwa Bharati University in Shanti Niketan was started as an ashram by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's father Maharishi Devendranath Tagore in 1863 as an ashram on 7 acres of land. Wherever Rabindranath Tagore later established this university and developed it as an excellent centre for the study of arts and culture along with science. It was founded in the year 1901 by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore with only 5 students.
It got the status of National University in 1921 and currently more than 6 thousand students study here. Vishwa Bharati is the oldest central university in the country. In May 1951, Visva-Bharati was declared a central university and an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament.
