New York: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the 76th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York today, September 25,  during which he is likely to focus on “pressing global challenges” including the Covid-19 pandemic, terrorism, climate change and other key issues. The theme for this year’s General Debate is ‘Building Resilience through hope to recover from Covid-19, rebuild sustainably, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people, and revitalise the United Nations.’

As per reports, Prime Minister Modi will discuss various significant issues including terrorism, regional situation and UNSC reforms, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla had said earlier. The prime minister is expected to raise the issue of terrorism, highlight India’s contribution to the world during the Covid-19 pandemic and also articulate his government's ambitions on renewable and clean energy. He might also emphasise the need for a stable regime in Afghanistan following the US’ withdrawal from the war-torn country.

Over 100 heads of state and government are attending the annual high-level General Assembly session, which was held virtually in 2020 owing to the COVID pandemic.

Biden, PM Modi, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his Japanese counterpart Yoshihide Suga participated in the Leaders' Summit of the Quadrilateral Framework in Washington.  Modi had arrived in Washington on Wednesday for a 3-day visit to the country on Wednesday, his first beyond neighbourhood since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
