New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi on Friday said that his visit to Maldives and Sri Lanka starting from Saturday reflects the importance India attaches to the ' Neighbourhood first ' policy. PM Modi will be the first to visit Maldives under his first bilateral visit after winning the Lok Sabha polls and returning to power. He will visit Sri Lanka from Maldives on Sunday.

PM Modi said, "I am confident that my visit to Maldives and Sri Lanka will further strengthen our close and cordial relations with our maritime neighbours in line with our ' Neighbourhood first policy ' and the vision of security and advancement for all in the region." In a statement issued prior to PM Modi's departure, he said his visit to Sri Lanka was to express India's solidarity with the Government and people of the island country in the wake of the "horrific terrorist attacks" on April 21. PM Modi said, "The people of India stand firmly with the Sri Lankan people, who suffered great anguish and destruction in the wake of the horrific terrorist attack on the day of Easter. We fully support Sri Lanka in the fight against terrorism. "
