New Delhi: US-based NRI businessman and Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awardee Darshan Singh Dhaliwal has made a big claim regarding PM Modi. Discussing with the English newspaper, Dhaliwal has said that PM Narendra Modi had apologized in April 2022 for the incident of sending me back from the airport. According to the report, businessman Darshan Dhaliwal said that PM Modi apologized to him in front of 150 people and he (PM Modi) said that 'we made a big mistake by sending you, but you have great nobility that you still came when we spoke.'

Darshan Singh Dhaliwal was deported from the Delhi airport on the intervening night of October 23 and 24, 2021, for allegedly arranging langar during the farmers' agitation near the border in the national capital. Speaking to the media after receiving the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award from President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday, Dhaliwal said that Prime Minister Modi had said this during the hosting of a Sikh delegation at the PM's official residence in April 2022. According to the report, Sikh businessmen from all over the world participated in this meeting. Dhaliwal, who moved to the US in 1972 to study engineering, runs a fuel station in the US. In a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office on April 29, 2022, PM Narendra Modi praised the contribution of Sikhs and said that this community has acted as an important link in strengthening India's relations with other countries.

Recalling the day he was sent back by flight, Darshan Singh Dhaliwal said he was given two options by the officials at the airport. Dhaliwal said the first option given by the officials was to stop the langar and mediate with the farmers and go back as the second option. Darshan Singh Dhaliwal said that their problem was with the langar run by me, while during the farmers' movement, the langar was arranged by me keeping in mind the humanitarian aspect. He said that when the farmers came to Delhi in December 2022, it started raining in the middle of the night. I saw in the video that even in this cold, they were sleeping in the water. I felt that these people needed help. So I decided to provide tents, bunks, blankets, and quilts for anchoring and stay. Asked about the political reason for supporting the protesting farmers, Dhaliwal said, "From my side, this arrangement was in the form of humanitarian assistance. It had nothing to do with politics. I did this for the benefit of the people. On the decision to be sent back by the Indian government, he said that this was destiny. The Government of India sent me back for some reason and today they are honoring me with the highest award. It is God's mercy.'' He said that many awards have been received from the Punjab government. But this is the first from the central government.
