New Delhi: Former President Late Pranab Mukherjee wrote in his memoir that after he was elected to his highest constitutional post, the Congress deviated from the political direction and some party members believed that if he became PM in 2004, there would not have been a humiliating defeat for the Congress in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He further said that though I do not keep this opinion.

He said that I believe that after becoming my president, the party leadership lost the political direction. Sonia Gandhi was unable to handle the party's affairs, so the long absence from Manmohan Singh's house took a break on any private contact with the MPs. Mukherjee had written a memoir 'The Presidential Years' before his demise. The book published by Rupa Publications will be available to readers from January 2021.

He passed away at the age of 84 years on 31st July last due to health complications after his coronavirus infection. His remarks in the context of the Congress in the book are coming up when the party is facing internal turmoil. The book seeks to see his long journey from childhood to president in a village in West Bengal.
