New Delhi: Martyr Colonel Santosh Babu has been awarded the Mahavir Chakra while fighting bravely with Chinese soldiers in the Galwan Valley of Ladakh last year. Along with him, 20 other Indian heroes who gave a befitting reply to Chinese soldiers in Galwan were also awarded. Santosh Babu along with five other soldiers were also posthumously awarded Veer Chakra, including Naib Subedar Nuduram Soren, Havaldar K Pilani, Havaldar Tejendra Singh, Nayak Deepak Singh and Sepoy Gurtej Singh for driving out enemies in the Galwan conflict.

While 14 other soldiers have been awarded army medals. For the first time since the Kargil war in 1999, gallantry awards have been conferred on the soldiers who were martyred in this clash in galwan valley. Four Param Vir Chakra medals and 11 Mahavir Chakras were awarded for the bravery shown in the Kargil conflict of 1999. During Operation SNOW LEOPARD, Col. Santosh Babu, Commander, Commanding Officer 16 BIHAR Regiment posted in Galwan Valley (Eastern Ladakh) was entrusted with the responsibility of setting up an observation post in front of the enemy. Colonel Santosh Babu gallantly led his battalion and fought the enemies. The number of enemies was high. Enemy soldiers had attacked using sharp weapons with stone-pelting from height. Even after being seriously injured, Colonel Santosh Babu fought till his last breath to prevent the attack of the vicious enemy and did not allow the enemies to move forward. Col Santosh Babu has been awarded the Mahaveer Chakra for this supreme sacrifice.

Naib Subedar Nuduram Soren led his post during the ongoing operation SNOW LEOPARD in Galwan Valley (Eastern Ladakh). They continued to drive out Chinese soldiers even after they were badly injured during the clash. Before their valour, the enemy's spirits were also shattered. He has been awarded the Veer Chakra for fighting this bravery, showing amazing courage and making the supreme sacrifice. With this, The Palani of Havaldar was posted in the Galwan Valley. On the night of June 15, 2020, while patrolling, they attained valour while fighting the enemy. He was also awarded the Veer Chakra for his courage and supreme sacrifice. Nayak Deepak Singh battalion was posted on the duty of nursing assistant. During operation SNOW LEOPARD, he treated the soldiers injured in a clash in Galwan Valley. After assessing the state of war, he immediately proceeded to medical help. As soon as the clash took place and the number of casualties increased, he went to the frontline to give first aid to the injured soldiers. He suffered serious injuries in the clash with heavy stone-pelting but continued to provide medical assistance.

While saving many lives, they finally attained valour. Nayak Deepak Singh has been awarded the "Veer Chakra" for this unprecedented work. On June 15, 2020, Havildar Tejinder Singh of the 3 Medium Regiment was included in the regimental column posted in Galwan Valley (East Ladakh). He was leading his post. Sepoy Gurtej Singh himself was seriously injured while fighting the enemy. Sepoy Gurtej Singh has also been awarded the Veer Chakra for his amazing valour.
