New Delhi: Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, emphasized substantial and progressive transformations in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh after the abrogation of Article 370. Rai presented a written response to Rajya Sabha, highlighting comprehensive advancements in governance, development, and security in both Union Territories.

Rai affirmed the government's unwavering commitment to the holistic development of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. He cited various initiatives undertaken for socio-economic progress and good governance, aimed at fostering an environment conducive to overall growth and ensuring peace and prosperity for the residents of both territories.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Jamyang Namgyal from Ladakh advocated maintaining the current administrative status quo, emphasizing the need for peace, security, and progress over immediate elections in the erstwhile state.

The ongoing Winter Session of Parliament witnessed heated discussions in the Lok Sabha regarding two bills related to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The debate featured strong exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition, with TMC MP Saugata Roy urging the Centre to set a definite timeline for conducting Assembly polls in the UT.

In response, Namgyal questioned the feasibility of peaceful elections in the region, highlighting historical challenges of conducting polls amidst violence and threats to life. He emphasized that prioritizing national security and public safety was paramount over hastily conducting elections.

Namgyal also contrasted the current peaceful environment in the region with the turbulent past, citing instances where fear of violence once prevailed. He highlighted the shift from turmoil and curfews to a prevailing sense of peace, even in regions previously considered hotbeds of militancy.

The Lower House saw active participation from various members, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah expected to address the House the following day. Opposition members criticized the government for delaying elections in Jammu and Kashmir, accusing it of overlooking the need for prompt assembly polls despite claiming improvements in the law and order situation.

The Lok Sabha engaged in debates regarding two bills--Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 and Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023. During the discussions, National Conference MP Hasnain Masoodi raised concerns, stating that introducing the bills at this stage was premature since the Supreme Court was yet to announce its verdict on petitions challenging the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act.

Masoodi argued that decisions concerning the matters addressed in the bills were previously made by the erstwhile Assembly, suggesting that any changes should follow a similar legislative process.
