Srinagar:  Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), emphasized the significance of the Kashmiri language as the true identity of the Kashmiri people. She expressed concerns about the endangerment of their language and the need to preserve it.

During the book launch event for 'Qatraen Huend Shahar,' authored by Dr. Gazanfar Ali Gazal at Tagore Hall in Srinagar, Mufti addressed the audience, stating, "Our mother tongue, the Kashmiri language, is not only our identity but also a powerful weapon. Throughout history, we have fought battles using our language. However, regrettably, our identity, our mother tongue, is now under threat, making it difficult for us to communicate in the uncomfortable atmosphere we find ourselves in."

Mufti further emphasized that the Kashmiri language holds immense importance, but the current generation shows inadequate interest in their mother tongue. She remarked, "The Kashmiri language has its own significance, but unfortunately, our youth are not displaying sufficient interest in preserving their mother tongue. Even my own children are not speaking it fluently. It is crucial for people to understand the value of both Urdu and Kashmiri languages, which serve as our official and ancestral languages, constituting our true identity."

In a recent development, Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the PDP, welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to hear petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 and the division of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories. In a tweet, she expressed her hope for justice to prevail, stating, "I welcome the Hon'ble SC's decision to finally address the pending petitions since 2019 that challenge the unlawful abrogation of Article 370. I hope justice is upheld and delivered for the people of J&K. The SC ruling on Article 370 established that its revocation can only occur upon the recommendation of the J&K constituent assembly."

A Constitution bench comprising five judges of the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the batch of petitions opposing the abrogation of Article 370 and the division of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories on July 11.
