New Delhi:  Ahead of a five-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court deciding the legality of same-sex marriage in India, the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) on Sunday (April 9) made a statement in support of same-sex marriage, saying that LGBTQA people should be treated equally like all citizens of the country.

According to the report, the IPS, which played a key role in the apex court's repeal of Article 377 that criminalised homosexuality on September 6, 2018, said homosexuality is not a disease. Let us tell you that, last month, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Y Chandrachud said that a batch of petitions seeking legal recognition for same-sex marriages should be decided by a constitution bench. The Supreme Court had adjourned the hearing of the case till April 18. The central government has opposed a plea to legalise same-sex marriage, saying the Supreme Court now bears the "serious responsibility" of determining how society will be shaped in the future.

At the same time, the organisation of psychiatrists in the country has said in its statement on gay marriage that 'The Indian Psychiatric Society would like to reiterate that these people should be treated like all the citizens of the country, and once being a citizen, any education, employment, housing, income, government or military service, access to health care, property rights, marriage, adoption, and rights of survivorship, etc. are all civil rights one can enjoy.' The Society further stated that there is no evidence to indicate that LGBTQ people cannot participate in any of the above. Conversely, any form of discrimination that prevents access to any of the above rights can lead to mental health issues.
