Jalandhar: Last Friday night farmer Jagtar Singh Bajwa (70), who was the sarpanch of his village and his son Kripal Singh Bajwa (40) committed suicide in Mohadipur village under Hoshiarpur, Punjab. Both father and son were actively participating in the peasant movement. In the suicide note written by the son before he died, the central government was blamed for this move and also indicated that Congress government of Punjab failed to forgive their debt.

Even after being eligible for the debt waiver scheme of the state government announced in 2017, the cooperative society sent them information regarding the auction of house and property six months ago to recover their debt. Sources in the Punjab government claim that their loan waiver file was approved recently, but they were not informed about it by society.

Jagtar was a small farmer with 3 acres of land, out of which he transferred one acre of land to his two sons. He sold a part of an acre a few years ago to pay off a loan from a private bank. There was a total loan of Rs 6.50 lakh on father and son.
