Punjab: Gurnam Singh Chaduni, the head of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), is poised to launch his own political party in Chandigarh today. It will be the first political party to emerge from the farmers' year-long protest against the three farm legislation if it is formed. Chaduni's plan to form a political party comes months before the Punjab Assembly elections.
On November 26, the BKU leader proposed that a 'Punjab model' be placed in front of the country as an example for the rest of the states.
Chaduni said to the media at the time, "I'm not running for office in Punjab, but I'm rallying supporters to run and present a model (of governance). For the polls, we'll start our own party... If our government is elected in Punjab, the entire country will turn to the Punjab model in the 2024 (national) elections."
"We're running 'Mission Punjab,' which states that those with votes, not those with money, should rule. If the former is in charge, laws will be enacted in favour of the people, but if the latter is in charge, laws will be made in favour of the wealthy "he added.
