NEW DELHI: On Friday, BJP member Rakesh Sinha's private member's bill to manage the expanding population in the Rajya Sabha was withdrawn. The BJP MP dropped the Population Regulation Bill, 2019, which proposes a two-child minimum requirement.

People who have more than two children are ineligible to be elected as MPs, MLAs, or members of any body of local self-government, according to the bill.

"We will be able to manage the population growing above caste, religion, language, and district as efforts are being conducted by the government in this area," Sinha said while dropping the bill. During the debate on the bill, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that population control should be achieved by raising public knowledge rather than by force and making it mandatory.

"We've seen progress since the fertility rate has dropped to roughly 2%, indicating that the family planning goal is on track to succeed," the Health Minister continued. "The government's policy is to achieve its objectives without resorting to force, instead of focusing on efforts aimed at raising public awareness and educating citizens. We're making progress by doing so "Mandaviya stated.
