Paris: In a notable address at Sciences PO University in Paris, France, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appeared to take a veiled jab at the central government amidst the ongoing India vs. Bharat debate. He expressed that those "attacking the soul of India" should face significant consequences for their actions.

Gandhi stated, "Individuals attempting to alter the country's name are essentially attempting to rewrite history. We must set examples and ensure that those responsible for such actions face significant repercussions. This will convey a clear message that anyone seeking to undermine the essence of India will also face consequences." He emphasized that whether the nation is referred to as India or Bharat is less important than the intention behind the change. He contended that the Opposition alliance INDIA bloc's name had provoked the central government to advocate for 'Bharat' as the country's official name.

"The Indian Constitution employs both terms, India and Bharat, interchangeably. Both designations are perfectly valid. However, it appears that our coalition's name, INDIA, has irked the (central) government, leading to their decision to change the country's name," he explained.

'Suppression of Minorities in India Is 'Shameful''

Accusing the BJP-led central government and the right-wing organization Rashtriya Swayamseva Sangh (RSS) of marginalizing minorities in India, Gandhi asserted his commitment to prevent such treatment in the country. "Gandhi stated, "The BJP and RSS are attempting to stifle the voices and participation of individuals from marginalized and backward communities. I do not want an India where people are mistreated simply because they belong to a minority." He expressed concern over minorities feeling uncomfortable in their own country, deeming it a "shameful matter for India" that requires rectification.

'Nothing Hindu About BJP's Ideology'

Gandhi also critiqued the BJP's Hindutva ideology, asserting that it does not align with the teachings of Hindu epics. He stated, "I have studied the Bhagwad Gita, the Upanishads, and other Hindu scriptures. I can confidently say that there is nothing Hindu about the BJP's approach to conflict. There is absolutely nothing." He recalled the wisdom imparted to him by a knowledgeable Hindu, emphasizing that one should not terrorize or harm those weaker than themselves. He argued that the BJP's actions do not reflect Hindu nationalism but rather a pursuit of power and dominance.

'China Is a Global Concern'

Speaking against the backdrop of the G20 Summit in Delhi and the India-China relationship, Gandhi criticized China for being a "non-democratic" nation that has achieved significant control over global manufacturing industries. He expressed a collective concern, stating, "We must all be wary of a critical issue that affects everyone – India, Europe, and the USA. The issue is that today, China dominates bulk production, manufacturing, and value addition on a global scale. The Chinese have competed and succeeded. They excel in production, but they do it through a non-democratic process."

Gandhi emphasized the importance of competing with China while upholding democratic and political freedoms. Highlighting the need for careful navigation in international disputes, he remarked, "When dealing with a country as significant as India, we must maintain relations with several nations. As a nation, we act in our own interests. We make decisions that align with our interests. While it may be challenging to pick sides, we firmly believe that voice and democracy hold paramount importance."
