New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi,  took a moment on Tuesday, October 31, to reflect on the 39th death anniversary of his grandmother, the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He shared heartfelt sentiments, referring to her as his pillar of strength.

"My grandmother, my source of strength! I am committed to safeguarding the India for which you made immense sacrifices. Your memory is forever etched in my heart," Rahul Gandhi conveyed via his social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter).

Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge, all leaders of the Congress party, paid their respects by offering floral tributes to the late former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at Shakti Sthal in the nation's capital.

In the meantime, Varun Gandhi, a Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party, also fondly remembered his grandmother, labeling her as the 'Mother of the Nation.'

"On the anniversary of my grandmother's passing, the late Indira Gandhi ji, I salute her. She was a symbol of unparalleled courage and commitment, a trailblazer in democratic socialism," Varun Gandhi expressed on X.

"In addition to her unwavering resolve in making tough decisions, she possessed a simple and tender maternal kindness. She truly was the 'Mother of the Nation,'" he added.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot paid his respects to the former Prime Minister of India as well.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in his tribute, highlighted Indira Gandhi's pivotal role in shaping a strong and progressive India.

"We humbly pay our respects to Indira Gandhi, India's inaugural female Prime Minister and our national icon, on the anniversary of her passing. She played a crucial role in crafting a robust and forward-looking India with her resolute will, effective leadership, distinctive work style, and visionary outlook," Kharge expressed on X (formerly Twitter).

Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor fondly remembered his first encounter with the former Prime Minister of India on this day.

"Commemorating Smt. Indira Gandhi on the day of her martyrdom. My first meeting with her dates back to 1975 when, as a student leader, I had the privilege of discussing various issues at her residence with a dozen of us from Delhi University. Just two months later, I had the opportunity to interview her for a Swiss youth magazine (picture attached). Paying my respects to her memory in Thiruvananthapuram," he shared on X.

Srinivas BV, the President of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC), and other young activists also paid their respects to Indira Gandhi at Shakti Sthal Rajghat.

Born on November 19, 1917, to India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and Kamala Nehru, Indira Gandhi served as India's first and only female Prime Minister from January 1966 to March 1977 and once again from January 1980 until her tragic assassination on October 31, 1984. Her legacy continues to leave an indelible mark on the nation.
