The Jan Shatabdi Express between Agartala and Jiribam, which connects two north-eastern states, Tripura and Manipur, was inaugurated by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The minister flagged off the train through video conference and lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's central administration, stating that the government is trying to improve the northeast region's and country's connectivity. The train would travel three times a week between Agartala railway station in Badharghat and Jiribam railway station in Manipur. It will take six hours to travel.

The train's opening answered a long-standing demand of the people of Manipur, Tripura, and South Assam. "The launch of this train is a step forward in accomplishing Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji's goal of making the North East the AshtaLakshami of the country's economy," Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb stated on Twitter. Connecting North Eastern states with train links will expand the region's economic opportunities". "Since the time of the kings, Tripura and Manipur have had a relationship. The railway line connected not just Tripura and Manipur, but the entire northeast area as well "N. Biren Singh, the chief minister of Manipur, said.

The inaugural event in Tripura was attended by Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Pratima Bhowmik, Tripura Transport Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, BJP legislator Mimi Majumder, and others, while the inaugural event in Imphal was attended by Dr. R. Ranjan Singh, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, and others.
