Life has been greatly affected between the havoc and lockdown of Corona. Similarly, like the culture and traditions of tribal dominated Bastar, the history here is also interesting. The capital of the Bastar princely state was shifted to Jagdalpur on the day of Akshaya Tritiya 246 years ago. The story behind this is very interesting. Although there is no documentary evidence of this, it is common knowledge that the then king Dalpat Dev along with his horsemen reached the village Jagatuguda situated on the banks of Indravati river in South Bastar. Here he saw a rabbit running in an aggressive position to his hunting dog. They thought that there is definitely might in this soil, only then a rabbit also has the ability to chase a strong dog from here. After this, he decided to settle the capital here.

For your information, let us tell you that Jagatuguda was a small village with 11 huts. The population was barely 60 people. Dalpat Dev asked Jagatu Mahra of Jagatuguda for land to build the capital. He assured that if the new capital is formed, Jagatu's name will be included in it. Jagtu gave away 600 acres of his land. After this Jagtaguda and Dharamuguda were combined to form Jagdalpur with two settlements. In Jagdalpur the word 'Jag' was taken from the name of Jagatu Mahra and the word 'Dal' was included in the name of King Dalpat Dev.

In just two years, what was the palace was ready? In this, the residence of the Raj family, the royal court, the mews, the staff residence, etc. were all built. Earlier, Bastar's capital was in Bastar. Raja Dalpat Dev's convoy left from Bastar under the supervision of the soldiers on the day of 1774 Thursday, Akshaya Tritiya. This convoy reached Jagatuguda after three consecutive hours of travel. Raja Dalpat Dev had seven queens. He had only one son from Patrani, Ajmer Singh. Patrani Ramkunwar Chandelin was the daughter of Kanker Raja.
