Jaipur: On Wednesday, The Rajasthan Legislative Assembly passed a bill to grant five per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutes to Gujjars. The quota is also applicable to four other communities, namely Banjaras, Gadia Lohars, Raikas and Gadaria, who had been agitating for it along with the Gujjars.
The bill was tabled in the Assembly by Energy Minister B D Kalla in a bid to pacify the Gujjar community which has been holding protests across the state since Friday demanding quota in jobs and educational institutes. The Rajasthan Backward Classes (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutes in the State and of Appointments and Posts in Services under the State) Amendment Bill, 2019, was introduced in the state Assembly earlier in the day.
Violent clashes had taken place during the protests while the Delhi-Mumbai railway track and several highways and roads were also blocked. The bill envisages a jump in quota from 21 per cent to 26 per cent.
