Rajasthan Gehlot govt has no respect for 'rule of law': BJP

NEW DELHI: The BJP continued its onslaught on the Ashok Gehlot government on Wednesday, saying that there was no regard for the rule of law in Rajasthan after state police issued a notice to BJP MLA Chandrakanta Meghwal in a five-year-old assault case. The BJP also called the action "illegal" because it targeted a Dalit woman.

Guru Prakash Paswan, the BJP's national spokesperson, tweeted: "Rajasthan has no respect for the rule of law. It is reprehensible that an illegal action was taken against a Dalit woman MLA with the goal of influencing the RS poll." Meghwal has been summoned by the Rajasthan Police to appear in court and cooperate with the investigation into the 2017 case.

B.L. Santhosh, BJP national general secretary (organisation), said it was the first hint of fear in the Congress camp ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, and that it would be too much for chief minister Gehlot.

Santhosh noted in a tweet on Tuesday, "In terms of the Rajya Sabha elections, there are first signals of alarm in the @INCIndia camp in Rajasthan. Police have summoned @BJP4Rajasthan MLA in a 5-year-old case. For CM @ashokgehlot51, this will be too much." According to sources, Meghwal is one of the BJP MLAs who are staying at a resort on the outskirts of Jaipur for a 'training camp' ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections on June 10.

Dr Satish Poonia, the president of the Rajasthan BJP, has cautioned Chief Minister Gehlot against playing with fire.
