Jaipur: A 24-year-old lady in Bhilwara, Rajasthan, was allegedly tortured into taking a "virginity test" by her in-laws, who then beat her when she "failed" it and summoned a panchayat that demanded that her family pay Rs. 10 lakh. The woman claims she was forced to take the "test" on the first day of her marriage, May 11, in Bhilwara, in the lawsuit she filed on Saturday against her in-laws.

In the FIR, she said that her husband and his relatives had beaten her after she "failed" the "exam," and on May 31, they had called a Khap panchayat at a nearby temple, where they demanded that her family pay Rs 10 lakh.

The police said, the woman informed her in-laws that a rape case had been reported to Subhash Nagar police station and that she had reportedly been raped by a neighbour before getting married. 
Station House Officer (Bagor) Aayub Khan said, after the incident was publicised in the local media,  the police looked into it, and on Saturday, a charge was filed against her in-laws.

The woman is a victim of Kukadi Pratha, which is common among the Sansi nomadic group, according to Mandal DSP Surendra Kumar. In Rajasthan, this social ill is called as Kukadi Pratha. 
He said after the matter came to notive, a "factual report was submitted and a case registered in the matter."

In a video, the victim is heard allegedly saying, "The rites that were carried out in the afternoon I failed. Following then, debates continued well into the night. I refrained from speaking out of dread. Then my spouse and my in-laws started beating me up."
