NEW DELHI: The opposition parties within the INDIA bloc began discussions on Monday to propose a resolution seeking the removal of Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. The resolution, aimed at addressing concerns over Dhankhar's conduct, is expected to be finalized today, Tuesday, after further consultations with party leaders.
While the resolution faces a tough challenge due to the opposition's relatively limited numbers in the Rajya Sabha, it is being seen as a strategic effort to strengthen the unity of the opposition bloc. The parties involved believe that the resolution will serve as a statement of solidarity and highlight their collective stance on the issues surrounding the Rajya Sabha’s leadership.
Dhankhar, who assumed office as Rajya Sabha Chairman in 2022, has faced criticism from opposition parties, particularly for his perceived bias in handling parliamentary proceedings. However, the resolution is unlikely to succeed without broad support across the floor, given the ruling party's majority.
On Day 12 of the Parliament Winter Session, both Houses were adjourned amid growing tensions between the ruling BJP and the Opposition. The BJP intensified its attack on the Congress, accusing it of having alleged links to George Soros, while Opposition members claimed the treasury benches were obstructing the functioning of the House.
The long-standing strained relationship between Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and the INDIA bloc reached a boiling point on Monday, December 9, 2024. Sources from the Opposition revealed that they are planning to submit a notice to move a resolution seeking the removal of Dhankhar from his post. The motion will be filed under Article 67(b) of the Constitution. It is reported that over 50 MPs, including members from Congress, Trinamool Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, and Left parties, are prepared to sign the notice.
Congress MP Digvijaya Singh, speaking to reporters outside the House, expressed his frustration, stating that he had never seen such bias in his long legislative career since 1977. "I have served in both government and Opposition, as an MLA and an MP. In my entire political career, I have never seen such a biased Chairman. He prevents us from speaking while allowing everyone from the treasury benches to speak, one by one," Singh said.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh filed a suspension of business notice to discuss the worsening law and order situation in Delhi, with rising crimes and threats against representatives in the National Capital. Singh highlighted the growing concerns, emphasizing that Delhi is home to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, ambassadors, and Members of Parliament, all of whom are at risk due to the escalating security issues.
