NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha session for Friday encountered its second adjournment before noon, amidst a tumult created by opposition members. Their clamor centered around the insistence for a discourse on the prevailing Manipur issue and a demand for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide a statement on the matter within the House.
At the commencement of the Question Hour, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar found the opposition members fervently raising slogans, fervently urging for a deliberation on the unrest in Manipur—a region marked by ethnically driven turmoil. These members also pressed for Modi's appearance before the House to address this matter.
Chairman Dhankhar voiced, "Had you, the opposition, consented to the proposal on July 20th for a brief discussion on this matter, the present situation could have been averted." He lamented the missed opportunity for a comprehensive discourse, pointing out the detailed consideration that the Manipur issue had received in the Lok Sabha.
Amid the continuous chanting of slogans, certain opposition members proceeded to the well of the House, prompting Chairman Dhankhar to rise and request their return to their designated seats. In light of the unyielding nature of the opposition members, the Chair made the decision to adjourn the session until 2 pm.
The opposition has persisted in its demand for a deliberation on the Manipur situation since the commencement of the Monsoon session on July 20th. Friday signifies the conclusive day of this legislative session.
In response to a motion of no-confidence presented in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Modi reassured the populace of Manipur that both the central and state governments were collaborating to reinstate tranquility within the state marred by violent upheavals. He asserted that stringent penalties would befall the culprits responsible for heinous crimes committed against women.
Previously, the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha were halted until noon due to a protest by opposition members against a BJP representative's reference to the law and order situation in Rajasthan. During the valediction ceremony for five members, BJP's Kirodi Lal Meena raised an issue of concern, stating that Rajasthan was grappling with a lack of law and order. This sparked a commotion amongst opposition parties, even as Chairman Dhankhar dismissed the aforementioned point of contention. The ensuing chaos led to the temporary adjournment of proceedings until noon.
