'They will welcome me very soon' says Ranjan Gogoi amid Congress walkout

Gogoi was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha member on Thursday amid fierce opposition from the opposition, sloganeering and walkout in the Rajya Sabha. Since being elected as a Rajya Sabha member, the controversy and opposition has reached its zenith. Several opposition parties led by the Congress accused Gogoi of compromising with the post of top judiciary. This was perhaps the first time in parliamentary history when a member was sworn in amidst so much opposition. The tone of the protest was so sharp and unexpected that the opposition members shouted slogans in front of them. Gogoi, who remained calm despite appearing uncomfortable in the House, tried to answer the opposition by saying that 'soon they will welcome him and will also start loving him.

For your information, tell that with the commencement of the proceedings of Rajya Sabha, Chairman Venkaiah Naidu first called Ranjan Gogoi for the oath. Then the opposition members started a commotion, shouting slogans towards Gogoi. From Congress' AK Antony, Anand Sharma, Jairam Ramesh, and members of some other opposition parties, standing from their seats and rising to take oath in a very aggressive manner, Gogoi was accused of 'dealing' with the government while holding the top judicial post. Some opposition members even went as far as to say that Gogoi had received this reward for giving the decision in favor of the government.

While ensuring Gogoi's oath, which was seen to be uncomfortable with such heavy opposition, the Chairman rejected the objections of the opposition members. The members of the ruling party thumped the tables to stop the attack of the opposition attack. Gogoi was then sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP in English and opposition parties boycotted his oath and walked out of the House. There is no other example of such strong opposition to the oath of a member in both houses of parliament. The new member is usually welcomed with warm oaths and applause. However, before the oath, Mr. Gogoi replaced Justice Gogoi in the record of Rajya Sabha. The word Shree was used in place of justice in front of his name to take oath as a member in the agenda of the House.
