NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old notorious criminal was apprehended by Delhi Police for kidnapping a 10-year-old child in northeast Delhi's Nand Nagri area, an official said. The official added that the suspect was also FOUND to be connected to two rape cases, an Arms Act violation, and a theft case that had been reported in the national Capital.

The accused was identified as Mohammed Iqbal, a resident of district Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh.According to the police, a kidnapping incident involving a 10-year-old child was reported to Nand Nagri police station on June 19 at about 9.00 p.m.

The complainant, Akbar, a resident of Sunder Nagri, said that his 10-year-old sister-in-law, who lives in Pooja Colony, Loni (Uttar Pradesh), had visited his home for a brief visit about two weeks earlier.

She was playing on the street in front of his house when a man named Iqbal, a neighbor's relative, attracted her and took her with him, according to the police complaint.

One team was tasked with reviewing the CCTV footage from the entire region throughout the investigation, and another team was dispatched to inspect all Delhi's parks and abandoned locations.

"Police team scanned and analysed the CCTV footage, and in one of the CCTV cameras, suspect Iqbal was seen taking the victim girl along with him at 6.45 p.m. on the day of the incident," said Joy Tirkey, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast).

"One police team was deployed right away to the suspected Iqbal's village. After extensive questioning of his relatives, it came to light that he rarely visited his house and usually hung out with anti-social people in UP. In 2019, his wife had already left him. Azad, one of his brothers, was detained in Kasna jail as part of the NDPS Case, the official claimed.

Iqbal had lately brought a woman from Dhampur, it was also discovered. Additionally, it was discovered that Iqbal had spent 15 days in a leased apartment in the Mullah Colony neighbourhood of Gazipur, and a rape case had been filed against him at the Dhampur (UP) police station. The DCP stated that he was wanted in the case.
