Gangtok: The road connecting Somgo Lake and Nathula border in Sikkim to the capital Gangtok has been named after the country's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The new road has been officially inaugurated by the Governor of the State Ganga Prasad. The old route connecting the Nathula border with Gangtok is named after the country's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Officials said that the road, which is about 19.51 km long, has been operational for commuters for over a year, but has now been officially inaugurated by the Governor. Sikkim Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state unit president DB Chauhan on Tuesday informed about the inauguration of the road.  He shared pictures of the inauguration on social media and wrote, "The Hon'ble Governor was present at the inauguration of Narendra Modi Marg along with Shri Ganga Prasad Ji. The road has been inaugurated at Kayongasla Gram Panchayat. The new alternative road connecting Changu Lake has been named after PM Narendra Modi.''

On December 20, a proposal was moved in the Gram Sabha to name this new route after PM Narendra Modi. It was unanimously accepted. The road has been constructed by Border Road Organisation (BRO).
