New Delhi: The upcoming Test series in South Africa holds great significance for India, and Rohit Sharma's performance as a batter will be crucial. India is set to begin the two-match series on Boxing Day, starting at SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium in Centurion and followed by the second game at Newlands Cricket Stadium in Cape Town.

The two-month series kicked off with a three-match T20I series, and the first match was unfortunately washed out in Durban. Subsequently, a three-match ODI series and two Tests will follow. While Rohit Sharma has been rested for the white-ball leg of the tour, he is available for the Test matches, where he will assume the captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav, designated captain for the ODIs and T20Is.

Rohit's role as both an opener and captain is emphasized by former cricketer Irfan Pathan. According to Pathan, playing out the new ball is crucial, as it allows other batters in the lineup to have their opportunity to shine. India has never won a Test series in South Africa, managing only a draw once in eight attempts over 30 years. This presents a historic opportunity for Rohit Sharma, who boasts a commendable record in South Africa with 678 runs at an average of 42.37 in nine Tests. As the captain, all eyes will be on him, notes Pathan.

Pathan further describes Rohit and Virat Kohli as the "big brothers" of the team, suggesting that their leadership and guidance will be pivotal for the junior members during this challenging away series. In Pathan's view, if India manages to secure its maiden Test series victory in South Africa, Rohit Sharma's name will be etched in golden letters in the history of Indian cricket.
