Chandigarh: The Chandigarh university has been closed to students until September 24 due to a commotion following the alleged release of objectionable videos from the girls' hostel of Chandigarh University in Punjab's Mohali, university sources said on Monday.

After widespread student demonstrations calling for action in response to claims that a fellow hosteller had taken objectionable videos of several girls and posted them online, the decision was made. In relation to the event, two suspects have been taken into custody and two have been arrested.

Images taken today from the university campus showed a number of students carrying their bags as they departed the building. The demonstrations that started on Saturday night lasted well into Sunday night.

Students who were protesting said that a student had recorded films of female students while they were bathing in the dorm. Later, the video went popular on social media. The students who were protesting also alleged that suicide attempts by female hostel residents occurred after the recordings became public. Police, however, disproved all allegations of suicide.
Late on Sunday night, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) GS Bhullar addressed the unruly students and attempted to calm them down by stating that "implicit faith is important" and "law is being followed." The problem has been a communication breakdown, which we have repeatedly clarified. We are ensuring students that the law is being followed and that all legal procedures are being followed, according to DIG Bhullar.

Students having attempted suicide were also denied as "rumours" by Mohali Deputy Commissioner (DC) Amit Talwar. We have not been given any information that a suicide has occurred, Talwar said. "No information about suicide has come out. It is a rumour that has been spread.

Sunny Mehta, one of the suspects, was taken into custody on Sunday. The young man is from a village in Shimla district's Rohru Sub division, about 130 kilometres from the northern town. Rankaj Verma, a 31-year-old man, has been named as the detained person.

A team led by Dr. Monika, Superintendent of Police, Shimla, apprehended both suspects and turned them over to the Punjab Police from the Rohur and Dhalli police stations, respectively.

Police have also taken the female student from Chandigarh University in Mohali into custody. She allegedly claimed that she had recorded some girls and forwarded the tapes to a young man in Shimla.
