Long-distance runners have to break many obstacles and Shyamli Singh of Midnapore, West Bengal, overcame many such challenges to win the silver medal among Indian women players in the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K (25 km) race here on Sunday. Shyamali, who belongs to a very poor farmer family, came to know about the tumor (cancer) 2 years ago but it also did not let her spirits get battered. With the help of her husband cum coach Santosh, she participated in the 2017 Mumbai Marathon and comes at second position with a time of 3 hours, 8 minutes 41 seconds. This gives her 4 lakh rupees as prize money which she used for her treatment. After 2 years of winning over cancer, she came back strongly and reach the second position in the women's category in Kolkata 25K after Kiranjit Kaur (one hour 39 minutes and 2 seconds).

Needed money for treatment: According to media reports, remembering her struggle, Shyamali said, "Our situation was not good. My husband Santosh is also my coach. We needed money for treatment, so we decided to fight together. I participated in the Mumbai Marathon. I was committed to being in the top 3 so that I could get money for treatment."
