CHENNAI: Chennai Super Kings batter Ruturaj Gaikwad, said on Tuesday that captain M.S. Dhoni told him to be in the moment and enjoy the game when the Pune-born cricketer made his Indian Premier League debut.

Gaikwad was bought by CSK for Rs 20 lakh at the IPL 2019 Player Auction. After an amazing 2021 season in which he scored 635 runs in 16 games, the franchise paid Rs 6 crore to keep the batter on board for the 2022 season.

"M.S. Dhoni was very clear when I made my debut. He told us to have fun at the game. A lot of great players have been in this locker room, and a lot of great people have been involved with this franchise. So, I think he said, "You just need to be in that moment and enjoy it," Gaikwad told students at the Super Kings Academy here when he talked to them.

The 25-year-old, who won the Orange Cap in IPL 2021, has been CSK's most reliable opener over the last few years. He had some early successes, but he also had some failures.

"I really need to be thankful and happy that I was on a great team with a great atmosphere. Having M.S. Dhoni around me also helped me a lot. I never felt like I was having a setback during that time. "If I look back now, yes, I had failures at the beginning, but the management, the team, and the coach made me feel like I was making progress (good). "The whole CSK team, including the captain and coach, deserves a lot of credit," he said.

The right-handed batter says that every cricketer has setbacks, but it's important to stay positive.

"It's really important to stay positive and believe in yourself because you'll have worked hard all along and failed at cricket. It won't happen that you score runs every day. You will fail sometimes. Gaikwad said, "I think you really need to stay positive."
