NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday, August 23,  pulled up Baba Ramdev with  regard to the advertisements attempting to discredit allopathy and its practicing doctors amid the Covid-19 pandemic, and asked the Centre to restrain him.

Justices Hima Kohli and C.T. Ravikumar were on a bench led by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana that made the following ruling: "Why does Baba Ramdev blame allopathic doctors? He made yoga more well-known. That's great. He shouldn't, however, critique other systems." The Chief Justice questioned "what is the guarantee that Ayurveda will treat all diseases" after learning about Ramdev's media campaign against allopathy.

The Chief Justice blasted Ramdev for disparaging other medical systems and stated that he is accusing doctors of being "killers" in no uncertain terms.

The counsel appearing for the Indian Medical Association (IMA) pointed at the advertisements, where Ramdev had made disparaging statements against allopathy. He said that representations were made to the authorities but there was no response, and citing advertisements, the counsel said that 'they say that doctors were taking allopathy, but still they died due to Covid'. "If this goes on unabated...then it will cause serious prejudice to us," said advocate Prabhas Bajaj, representing the IMA.

The Chief Justice instructed the Centre's solicitor general, Tushar Mehta, to follow orders regarding false advertising by Patanjali. Ramdev must use moderation when utilising allopathy and other sophisticated medical systems, he urged.

How can Ramdev and Patanjali claim that allopathic doctors are Killers through media promotions, the bench questioned Mehta. The bench declared, "This is what? It's better if the Center holds him back." The top court requested the Centre's answer to the IMA's claim that there was a smear campaign against the Covid-19 immunisation effort and modern medicine after hearing the arguments.
