NEW DELHI: In its ruling, the Supreme Court upheld the use of Hindi in tribunal proceedings in Uttar Pradesh. Regardless of the witnesses' mother tongue, they are required to communicate and depose in Hindi while appearing before the Uttar Pradesh tribunal.

Justice Dipankar Datta, a single-judge in this case, emphasized that Hindi is the national language, making it obligatory for witnesses in UP court to use Hindi during their testimony.

The case involved a plea filed by the owner of a vehicle involved in a motor accident that occurred in Farukkanad, UP. The petitioner sought to transfer the proceedings to MACT Darjeeling in West Bengal, citing that all the witnesses were from Siliguri, West Bengal.

However, the Court rejected this plea, acknowledging India's linguistic diversity with at least 22 official languages. Despite the variety of languages spoken, the Court emphasized that Hindi being the national language, witnesses presented before the MACT, Fatehgarh, UP, are expected to convey their statements in Hindi.

It is worth noting that Justice Datta himself hails from West Bengal, yet he upheld the use of Hindi in this case. Furthermore, the Court dismissed the argument that the accident's occurrence in Siliguri warranted the transfer of the claim petition to MACT Darjeeling.

The Supreme Court's decision reinforces the use of Hindi in tribunal proceedings in Uttar Pradesh, emphasizing its significance as the national language of India.
