New Delhi: The Delhi Police detained a sextortionist racket involving five people on Friday after they are accused of posing the guise of an Inspector from the Crime Branch to extort a large quantity of money from a well-known businessman.

According to a statement released by the Delhi Police, complainant and businessman Sushil Gautam made claims that he received a video call from a girl on WhatsApp who asked him to undress as well. He then claimed that he then received a phone call from a man identifying himself as Inspector Vikram Rathore from the Crime Branch who demanded that he pay him about Rs 5,79,500 in exchange for sharing the video on social media.

The statement stated that the complainant then learned from the defendants that the girl who had phoned him had committed suicide in Rajasthan and that a murder case would be filed against him.

The accused wanted extra money from the complainant to settle the dispute with the girl's family after extorting around Rs 5,79,500 from him, police said.

After conducting raids in Mewat, Haryana and Bharatpur, Rajasthan, the police have detained the suspects, identified as Khurshid Khan (31), Raman (42), Murari (42), Kaluram (33), and Vikram Jatav (24). After reviewing the information for 50 cell numbers, more than ten bank accounts, and the CCTV footage of more than 50 ATMs, the police made the arrest.
The police statement said that Raman, the leader of the entire gang, only completed eighth grade and is a habitual cyber offender who used extorted money to purchase a car, a plot, and agricultural land. It also said that Khurshid and Murari used to withdraw money from ATMs and give it to Rama after keeping their respective commissions.
