Bangalore:  The former Chief Minister of Karnataka,  B S. Yediyurappa has said the State government will send a proposal to the Centrral governemnt  to name Shivamogga airport after Kuvempu, poet and novelist of the 20th century, the first Kannada writer to get prestigious Jnanpith Award.

Famous Kannada poet and author Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa, often known as Kuvempu, lived in the 20th century. He was the first Kannada writer to win the coveted Jnanpith Award. He was born on December 29, 1904, in Mysore.

The Karnataka government honoured him with the title of Rashtrakavi (National Poet) in 1958 and Karnataka Ratna (Gem of Karnataka) in 1992 for his contributions to Kannada literature.

Yediyurappa  said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Shimoga on February 27. The new airport here will be inaugurated. On that day, Prime Minister Modi himself said that the name of the National Poet Kuvempu should be announced at the airport. We have decided to name it after Rashtrakavi Kuvempu, the greatest poet this country has seen in the 20th century and a Jnanpith awardee,"

He also stated that the name will be decided upon unanimously in the session and would then be suggested to the federal government.

"Kuvempu preached the universal message through writing. To put it into practise, Prime Minister Modi is working hard. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is aiming to promote Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam's concept "BS Yediyurappa said.
The epic tale "Sri Ramayana Darshanam," by Kuvempu, is a contemporary retelling of the Hindu Indian epic Ramayana and is regarded as a resurgence of the Mahakavya (Great Epic poetry) era in style and appeal.
He holds a special place in contemporary Indian literature thanks to his writings and his contribution to "Universal Humanism."

Kuvempu took his last breath on November 1, 1994, at the age of 89.
