In view of the crisis of plastic waste and its menace across the country, the Central Government has taken a major decision to rid India of single-use plastic. Announcing on Thursday, the Union Government said that single-use plastic will not be used across the country from 1st July 2022 next year.

The same Centre has issued a draft notification and said that the scheme should not affect small businesses and has also decided to increase the thickness of polythene bags from 50 microns to 120 microns from September 30 in view of the growing garbage crisis. Polythene bags of less than 50 microns are still banned in the country. Next year, 15th August 2022, till independence day, plastic goods used across the country will be banned under the rules of manufacture, import, storage, distribution, sale, and use.

With this, single-use plastic will be banned in two phases. The first phase will begin in January 2022, with some plastic items like plastic flags, balloons, and candy sticks banned and then a plastic ban on plates, cups, glasses, cutlery like forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping, packing films, invitation cards, cigarette packets, etc. A government official said that first, items that can be easily availed will be banned in a phased manner.
