Gandhinagar: Newly appointed External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections on Tuesday. Polling will be held on the 5th of next month. Hours after joining the BJP in Delhi in the presence of BJP Executive Chairman J P Nadda, Jaishankar visited Ahmedabad in Gujarat on Monday evening.

Jaishankar, 64, was a foreign secretary in the Modi-led previous government. He has been inducted into the Union Cabinet during the second term of the Modi government. Jugalji Thakor, head of the OBC cell of the Gujarat BJP, has filed his nomination papers for the second Rajya Sabha seat in Gujarat.
The two seats were vacated after BJP President and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister and MP Smriti Irani from Amethi Lok Sabha seat were elected to the Lok Sabha last month. Smriti Irani had shocked everyone by defeating Congress President Rahul Gandhi from Amethi. As per the rules, a Minister who is not a member of both the Rajya Sabha or the Lok Sabha is required to be elected to a House within six months of his swearing-in.
