NEW DELHI : Amid controversy over Congress floor leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's 'Rashtrapatni' remark, Union Minister Smriti Irani on Friday met President Droupadi Murmu. 

Taking to Tweet, Rashtrapati Bhavan said: "Smt Smriti Irani, Union Minister for Women-Child Development & Minority Affairs along with Dr Mahendra Munjpara, MoS for Women & Child Development and Shri John Barla, MoS for Minority Affairs, called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan." 

Irani has sought Congress President Sonia Gandhi's apology in the Lok Sabha, taking a harsh standce. "Had the previlage of calling upon the Honourable President of India Droupadi Murmu Ji along with MOS @DrMunjparaBJP Ji & @johnbarlabjp Ji," Irani wrote on Twitter after her meeting with the President. Since Thursday, both the Congress and the BJP have been criticising one another privilegeon the matter.

On Thursday, Irani urged that Congress extend an apology to the President and the nation. Irani alleged that "a tribal woman from an impoverished family who made history is repeatedly denigrated by the Congress."

She claimed that since the BJP-led NDA chose her as their presidential candidate, the Congress has been deliberately going after President Murmu.

Irani said: "The leaders of Congress labelled her a puppet and a representation of evil. Even after she was elected to the nation's highest constitutional position, the attacks do not appear to have stopped. , Chowdhury's remark remark is disrespectful to the great tribal heritage she represents and to the underprivileged who succeed through perseverance."
