LUCKNOW: In a bid to enhance the tourism experience and protect the environment, the government of Uttar Pradesh is determined to transform its tourist destinations into pollution-free havens, while also promoting water transport and tourism.

With the aim of achieving this goal, the state intends to deploy solar-powered boats across its rivers, lakes, and ponds. To facilitate the operation of these boats, the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA).

Emphasizing the significance of sustainable power sources in reducing carbon emissions, A. K. Sharma, the Minister for Urban Development in Uttar Pradesh, highlighted the government's promotion of such sources. Solar power stands as a prime example, with the country also exploring the utilization of hydrogen, green hydrogen, and wind energy. These alternatives are poised to reduce reliance on thermal and hydro power.

Furthermore, Minister Sharma announced the development of Ayodhya and Varanasi as solar cities, aiming to create a pollution-free atmosphere that benefits tourists. The introduction of solar boats is expected to further stimulate tourism in the region.

Minister Sharma also noted that this initiative would inspire the fishing community to adopt solar power for their boats. As a pilot project, three solar-powered boats, each accommodating 30 passengers and capable of reaching a maximum speed of 15 km per hour, will be operational -- one in Varanasi and two in Ayodhya. The cost of each boat is estimated at Rs 1.05 crore, with plans to introduce an additional 17 boats. Eventually, all Nagar Nigams (city municipalities) will have access to these environmentally friendly vessels.

Jaiveer Singh, the Tourism Minister, revealed that following the implementation of solar boats in Ayodhya and Varanasi, Mathura and Vindhyavasini will witness their introduction, contributing to both tourism promotion and pollution control. Furthermore, the government plans to establish a jetty in Ayodhya, a tent city in Varanasi, and a floating restaurant in Prayagraj to enhance the overall tourism experience in these locations.
