New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly has endorsed Rohit Sharma as the ideal candidate to lead India in the upcoming ICC events. Rohit, who recently made a comeback to the T20I format after a year-long break, led the team to a convincing 3-0 series victory over Afghanistan last month. Despite facing criticism and being sidelined from the shortest format following a disappointing performance at the 2022 T20 World Cup, Rohit's strong comeback in the Afghanistan series has reaffirmed his leadership abilities.

This will mark Rohit's second stint as the captain of India at a T20 World Cup, having previously led the team in the 2022 edition where India reached the semifinals but was defeated by England. Ganguly praised Rohit's leadership qualities, particularly highlighting his instrumental role in guiding India to the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup by securing 10 consecutive victories.

Speaking to Mid-Day, Ganguly expressed his confidence in Rohit's captaincy, stating, "Rohit Sharma is the right choice as India captain for the T20 World Cup. The way he led the Indian team and won 10 matches in the 50-over World Cup is still fresh in our memory. So, Rohit was the best choice."

The announcement of Rohit's captaincy for the T20 World Cup was made by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah ahead of the third Test against England. Shah voiced his belief that under Rohit's leadership, India would lift the trophy in the West Indies. Despite India's loss in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, Shah emphasized the team's remarkable performance, winning 10 consecutive matches, and expressed optimism about their chances in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Rohit's return to the T20I format against Afghanistan showcased his prowess, marking a promising start to his leadership journey in the upcoming tournament.
