South Korea's Education Ministry is considering mandating kindergarten and elementary students to take rapid Covid-19 tests at home twice a week beginning next month, according to officials.

"We're having discussions while keeping several options open, like requiring students to attend school after taking assessments at home," a Ministry official said.

Schools are preparing for the start of the new semester next month, despite omicron's rapid growth, which has just pushed the daily new Covid-19 tally to above 50,000.

Last week, the Ministry said it was negotiating with regional education authorities the distribution of free quick antigen test kits to conduct semi-weekly testing on 3.3 million kindergarten and elementary students for five weeks as a strategy to protect young kids against the pandemic.

Parents have mixed feelings about the proposed test scheme for young children.
