CHENNAI: The Madras High Court upheld the Tamil Nadu government's law reserving 7.5 percent of medical college seats for students from government schools on Thursday.

The legislation is valid and the government has the authority to provide reservations, the court observed. For the State, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal claimed that there is a considerable difference in cognitive development amongst children from different classes. He stressed the importance of addressing inequities within the group. The reservation should also be reconsidered after five years, according to the court.

On behalf of students in government-aided schools, the lawsuit was brought.

Speaking in the Assembly, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin described the decision as "historic," saying the bill was based on "correct statistics and debates."  Stalin said this is the DMK government's third victory for social justice in ten months. The AIADMK government implemented a reservation system for government school students.

Stalin further stated that the DMK government had approved legislation allowing for a 7.5 percent reservation in engineering, agricultural, fishery, and veterinary science courses at government colleges, universities, and prominent self-financed institutes.
