Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya Foundation Day: History and Background
The journey of Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya to becoming full-fledged states is closely tied to the reorganisation of northeastern India in the early 1970s. This period marked a significant milestone in the region's history, leading to the creation of these states.
Manipur and Tripura: Originally princely states, Manipur and Tripura merged with India in 1949. They were later made Union Territories in 1956, and their long-standing aspirations for full statehood were fulfilled on January 21, 1972.
Meghalaya: Initially part of Assam, Meghalaya was granted autonomous status in 1969. It eventually became a full-fledged state on the same date—January 21, 1972.
The transition of these regions into states was facilitated by the North Eastern Areas Reorganisation Act of 1971, a legislative framework designed to address the distinct administrative, social, and cultural requirements of the northeast.
