RANCHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced on Saturday that fast-bowling all-rounder Deepak Chahar would be replaced by off-spinner Washington Sundar for the remaining ODIs against South Africa (BCCI).

Chahar "had a stiffness in his back after the third and final T20I against South Africa in Indore and did not play in India's Playing XI in the first ODI in Lucknow," the BCCI said in a statement. According to the BCCI, Chahar will return to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and be under the care of the Medical Team there after being selected as one of the four travelling reserves for the T20 World Cup in Australia, which will take place later this month.

Following a six-month absence from international cricket due to a quadriceps rupture in February and a back injury sustained while receiving treatment for the same, Chahar returned during India's ODI tour of Zimbabwe in August.
After being selected as a reserve for the Asia Cup, he was called up to the starting lineup to replace an injured Avesh Khan in India's Super Four match against Afghanistan.

On August 10, while playing for his county team Lancashire versus Worcestershire in a Royal London One-Day Cup match, Washington dived onto the pitch and landed heavily on his left shoulder. He was forced to withdraw from India's three-match ODI series in Zimbabwe due to the injury.

Washington has had a stop-start year in 2022. After missing the England tour and the second part of the IPL 2021 due to a finger injury, he was forced to miss the ODIs against South Africa in January after testing positive for Covid-19.

Although he participated in ODIs against the West Indies in February at Ahmedabad, a hamstring injury prevented him from playing in the ensuing T20Is against the Caribbean team and Sri Lanka. He suffered a bowling hand injury while representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022 and had to miss a few games as a result. In June, he sought treatment at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

India, who is trailing South Africa 1-0 in the three-match series, will play the second One-Day International in Ranchi on October 9 and the series finale in New Delhi on October 11.
