The Supreme Court of India allowed live streaming of court proceedings, saying, 'it will start from the Supreme Court. Rules have to be followed for this. Live streaming of court proceedings will bring accountability into the judicial system," on Wednesday, 26 September.

With the dawning of a new era, the top court opens its doors for live streaming to bring transparency and serve public interest and has directed the framing of rules in this subject.

“Sunlight is best disinfectant,” the top court said in its verdict while allowing live streaming of Constitutional cases.

An Apex court’s bench comprises Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud had reserved its ruling on 24 August saying it wanted to implement the concept of "open court" to relieve the congestion of the courtrooms.

The verdict came on in the view of a clutch petitions filed by senior lawyer Indira Jaisingh, law student Snehil Tripathi and NGO Centre For Accountability and Systemic Change.

The Supreme Court observed that it does not perceive any difficulty in live streaming.

“Let us first start with it and see how it goes. We are just on a pilot project. We are not ruling out anything and will improve with time. We cannot have everything together,” the bench had observed.

Attorney General K K Venugopal appeared for the Centre and had earlier said that live streaming could be introduced as a pilot project in the Supreme Court on matters of constitutional importance and had submitted suggestions on the strategy for live streaming of court proceedings.
