The Supreme Court of India has summoned a detailed status report from the Tamil Nadu government in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case. The Supreme Court has asked the state government to file a status report in the case of the release of AG Perarivalan and other convicts within 2 weeks. The petition on behalf of Perarivalan said that he had filed a mercy petition with the Governor in the year 2018 and requested that the rest of the sentence be waived because he has already spent 27 years in jail.

Earlier, a status report was filed by the Central Government, on which it expressed dissatisfaction. On this issue, the Central Government in its reply to the Madras High Court said that it had sentenced all the people sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case. In March 2016, The Tamil Nadu government's proposal to release the 7 convicts was rejected as it would start a dangerous tradition.

The High Court was also told by the government that the CBI investigating the case also opposed the proposal. The Central Government, in its reply, said that it had written a letter to the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu on 18 April 2018, stating that it is wrong to approve the proposal to reduce the punishment of the convicts as per section 435 of the IPC. There will be dangerous traditions which will also become a challenge for the future.
