New Delhi: Gautam Navlakha, the accused of Bhima Koregaon violence, who has shaken the Dalit politics of the country, has got a big relief. The Supreme Court has put a stay on his arrest till 15 October. The court has asked Maharashtra to produce evidence against Navlakha. It may be noted that before the Gautam Navlakha case, Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi separated himself and then the two judges also left this case turn by turn. Navlakha has been accused in the Bhima Koregaon and Elgar Parishad cases. Navlakha is alleged to be associated with Maoism.

The matter is currently being looked into by the Pune Police. The Maharashtra government had filed a caveat giving Navalakha's favour an opportunity to be placed before the court. This step was taken soon after the petition was dismissed from the Bombay High Court. Ten activists including Navlakha were arrested in the case, who are accused of attending the Elgar Parishad meeting. The meeting was held in Pune on 31 December 2017. A day after this, on 1 January 2018, caste violence took place in Bhima Koregaon.

The Pune police had registered a case under various sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code on the accused arrested along with Navlakha. After this Navlakha appealed to the police to end the case. This appeal was dismissed in the Bombay High Court. Let me tell that many judges, including the Chief Justice, have separated themselves from Navlakha's case so far.
