New Delhi: Vijay Mallya, who was guilty of contempt of the top court, did not appear for debate on the sentence today. The judges expressed surprise at how he was still sitting there despite losing the legal battle of extradition in a UK court. The court adjourned the hearing till November 2, reprimanding the fugitive businessman's lawyer for not giving a clear answer to this.

Mallya, who absconded with thousands of crores of banks, has been convicted by the apex court for contempt for not giving proper information of assets and for illegally transferring money to family's foreign account. His reconsideration petition has also been rejected. In the order given on 31 August, the court fixed the date of 5 October for debate on the sentence. The Union Home Ministry was asked to ensure the presence of Mallya.

Today, as soon as the bench of Judge Ashok Bhushan commenced the hearing, the counsel for the Center stated that, "The entire legal process of extradition was completed in the UK. The Supreme Court had also rejected Mallya's appeal. But now there A secret process has started. We are not party to it. Therefore, we cannot tell how long it will last. " At this, the judges asked Mallya's lawyer, "The UK's top court has also allowed extradition. Then how have your clients stayed there? What secret process has been started there? How long will it last?"
