New Delhi: Justice Hemant Gupta is going to retire from the Supreme Court. On the last day of his working day i.e. Friday (October 15), he said goodbye to the apex court saying that the responsibility of the judges is not to please the people, but to decide the cases, as per the law. Justice Hemant Gupta will retire on 16 October after his tenure of nearly 4 years in the Supreme Court. Last Friday (15 October) was the last day of his working day.

Giving his farewell speech at an event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Justice Gupta said, 'A judge can never please the people. Because this is not the responsibility which has been entrusted to him. The role of making people happy is performed by other people in public life. No one can fulfil this responsibility with the aim of making someone happy. I was very strict in court, and outspoken. As per my understanding, whatever orders were necessary were passed. Let us tell you that Justice Hemant Gupta was also included in the Supreme Court bench which gave a fractured verdict on the Hijab controversy. Justice Gupta had upheld the Karnataka government's order to ban the hijab.

Justice Gupta further said, 'I have no regrets about anything. I have tried to discharge my duties with utmost humility and honesty. However, sometimes I lose my temper. No one is perfect. I don't claim everything is perfect. Whenever I have made a mistake, it has happened unintentionally.' He said, 'I am happy and satisfied with my career performance because whatever responsibility I got, I performed it without any fear and favour.' He said that being on the Supreme Court was a great experience and he always got help from all the lawyers.

Justice Hemant told the lawyers present in the court, 'I am speaking personally. I thoroughly enjoyed my innings of almost 20 years. Every day was a learner for me and you all have helped me in the learning process.' Let us tell you that Justice Gupta was promoted as a judge of the Supreme Court on 2 November 2018. After the retirement of Justice Gupta on the 16th, the number of serving judges in the Supreme Court will come down to 28. While 34 posts of judges including CJI are sanctioned.
