Chennai: The apex court on Friday stayed the order of the Madras High Court which ordered the Tamil Nadu government to stop the liquor being run in the state. The state government had moved the Supreme Court against this decision. Following this Supreme Court order, liquor shops in Tamil Nadu may once again open.

A bench of Judge L. Nageswara Rao, Judge Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Judge BR Gavai stayed the May 8 order of the High Court during the hearing through video conferencing on the appeal of the state-run firm Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMM). Giving information on behalf of the state government, Advocate Yogesh Kanna said that on this appeal, the bench has issued notices to the petitioners filing a petition in the High Court for the closure of liquor shops in the state.

He said that the Tamil Nadu government had challenged the order saying that it was suffering "huge loss" of revenue due to the closure of shops. The state government said in its petition that the High Court was misusing its judicial authority. However, now the Supreme Court has stayed the order of the Madras High Court, clearing the way for the liquor shops to open.
