New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday passed an important order in the case related to Chhattisgarh. In fact, a rape accused in Chhattisgarh was kept in jail even after the prescribed sentence. On this, the court ordered the state government to pay a compensation of Rs 7.5 lakh to the convict. This rape convict was kept in jail even after the completion of the sentence period.

Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice CT Ravikumar gave this judgment in the Supreme Court. The court said that the petitioner, being a youth, was deprived of his fundamental rights for a long time and illegally. Along with this he also suffered mental agony due to additional illegal detention. In the Supreme Court, the convict had referred to the decision of the Chhattisgarh High Court. The High Court had upheld the lower court's decision to convict the man under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC but reduced the sentence from 12 years to 7 years of rigorous imprisonment. But the man had to stay in jail for longer than the sentence.

Hearing the case, the Supreme Court found that the man was kept in jail for longer than the sentence awarded. The petitioner was kept in jail for 10 years, three months and 16 days. At this, Court also expressed his displeasure. The court said that it cannot be justified in any way. It was necessary that the petitioner would have been released as per the order of the High Court. In its judgement, the apex court has directed the Chhattisgarh government to provide a compensation of Rs 7.5 lakh to a rape convict if he is kept in jail even after completion of the sentence period.
