New Delhi: The Supreme Court declared on Tuesday that it has waited long enough and that the process of punishing Vijay Mallya for contempt of court, for which he was found guilty in July 2017, must be completed. The case will be heard in January by the Supreme Court, which will determine the severity of his penalty.

The Centre's Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted a memorandum from the Ministry of External Affairs for the court's consideration. According to the note, Mallya's extradition processes have reached a conclusion because he has exhausted all avenues of appeal in the United Kingdom. However, certain sensitive proceedings are underway, the details of which the UK has not revealed. Despite the top court's orders, Mallya's presence could not be secured as a result of the proceedings.

The bench stated that the procedure of imposing a penalty on Mallya in the contempt of court case must be completed because the top court has waited long enough. The highest court stated that Mallya is free to attend in person or through his attorney, but the case must be brought to light because it has been deferred since 2017, when he was found guilty of contempt.
