Supreme court to give its decision on UGC final year exams

New Delhi: The decision of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to cancel the July 6 circular and to conduct the final year exam will be pronounced in the apex court today. The Supreme Court had completed the hearing on August 18 for conducting final year examinations across the country and reserved the judgment, which will be read before everyone today.

A bench of judges Ashok Bhushan, Judge MR Shah and Judge R Subhash Reddy is hearing a petition for cancellation of the examination of the circular and final year, the court had reserved judgment in the matter on August 18 and asked to present the final argument in writing in 3 days from all the parties. In fact, UGC NET had issued a circular on July 6 related to compulsory completion of final year or semester examinations of UG and PG syllabus in universities and colleges across the country by 30 September 2020.

The exams are being opposed as due to the exams, the risk of infection may increase. Because of this, 31 students from various institutions across the country had filed a petition in the apex court regarding this move of the UGC, which demanded the cancellation of final year exams. Apart from this, there was a demand to prepare the result of the students on the basis of internal assessment, last year, which is to be heard today.
